Dedicated to Restoring Smiles and Lives

If you’ve been dealing with missing teeth, you may be experiencing emotional side effects because you feel embarrassed to smile or interact with others. Tooth loss can also lead to declining oral health and function, negatively impacting your chewing and nutrition. Even a single missing tooth can cause loss of bone and shifting of surrounding teeth, while the spaces can harbor bacteria and cause a gum infection that can spread to other parts of your body if left untreated. Our highly skilled oral and maxillofacial surgeon Dr. R. Jonas Collins has placed over 9,000 dental implants and treated patients with complex cases turned away by other practices. He is so passionate about the transformative benefits of dental implants that he shares his vast knowledge with other dentists, through teaching and designing restorations. In fact, our entire team finds it incredibly fulfilling to help patients restore their smiles and lives with dental implants in Charlottesville and Waynesboro, VA. We never turn patients away, offer phone consultations, and same-day treatment.

Comparing Different Tooth Replacement Options

If you have missing teeth, dental bridges and conventional dentures are often recommended, but both of these tooth replacement solutions have limitations and may present problems. A bridge requires altering the two teeth adjacent to the empty space in order to place the abutments or anchoring crowns. Conventional dentures are associated with common complaints including difficulty eating and speaking, clicking, slipping, the need to remove and clean them, and messy adhesives. And neither of these solutions provide the necessary stimulation to maintain healthy bone or fully restore oral function. Dental implants provide a contemporary restoration solution for most people with multiple failing or missing teeth and those without any teeth. Once they integrate with your jawbone, dental implants are stable—they don’t move and are completely functional in terms of aesthetics and your ability to eat your favorite foods.

Our Flexible Implant Solutions

A single dental implant consists of a titanium post, abutment, and a custom-made crown. An implant-supported bridge enables healthy teeth to remain untouched and preserves the bone in your jaw. Implant-supported dentures for upper arches, lower arches, or both rely on a minimum of two dental implants per arch. Full mouth dental implants provide all the benefits of single implants for people with multiple missing teeth and eliminate issues associated with conventional dentures. Since 1997, Dr. Collins has improved the oral health and smiles of thousands of patients with dental implants in Waynesboro, VA and at his beautiful modern practice in Charlottesville, VA.

They offer versatility because they can be used to replace one tooth, a row of teeth, or a complete arch of missing teeth. Dental implants blend natural beauty with function, making it possible to eat comfortably and feel confident smiling, while improving your oral health, physical health, and overall quality of life. For these reasons, dental implants are considered the gold standard tooth replacement.

The Long-Lasting Benefits of Dental Implants

Our Smile Transformation Process

Step 1: Consultation

Initially, we can set up a phone consultation for dental implants in Charlottesville and Waynesboro, VA to learn more about your unique dental needs and discuss our process including costs. If you decide to move forward, we’ll schedule an in-person visit, perform a thorough exam, and take diagnostic images with a CBCT scanner for an in-depth look at your jawbone. Dr. Collins uses these images to create a template to ensure precise placement of your implants on the day of surgery. Before you leave, we’ll schedule your next visit for dental implant surgery.

Step 2: Dental Implant Surgery

Dental implant surgery doesn’t differ too much from other dental procedures. We can perform the procedure with or without nitrous oxide, depending on your needs. In most cases, Dr. Collins is able to place your implant at the same time as removing your tooth, which is ideal because bone loss can occur as little as six weeks after extraction. A small hole is drilled in your jawbone and a titanium screw is carefully placed into the bone, then your gums are placed over the implant. While some cases require stitches, Dr. Collins has developed a minimally invasive flapless technique that is simple and efficient. Before you leave our office, we may be able to provide a temporary dental crown or set of teeth you’ll wear during the healing phase. Any postoperative discomfort can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. Most of our patients are able to resume normal activities later the same day a day or two after surgery.

Step 3: Final Smile

Before After

While healing differs from person to person, it typically take three months or longer for your gums to heal completely. During this time, the biocompatible titanium post “fuses” with your jawbone in a process called osseointegration. This process is integral to the unsurpassed strength, function, and longevity of dental implants. After proper healing, a second minor surgery is performed to fit the abutment (connector) to the top of the implant so we can affix a custom-made crown. This is fabricated to match the color and shape of your remaining healthy teeth for a seamless smile. Dental implants provide a natural-looking and fully functional solution that can last a lifetime with a combination of proper placement, continual proper oral hygiene, and professional care.

The Benefits of Seeing Our Oral Surgeon

While some general dentists have the experience to place dental implants, they lack the specialized training oral surgeons have to treat complex cases with ease and efficiency. Choosing an oral surgeon with a proven track record placing dental implants and delivering effective preliminary treatments ensures successful outcomes including improved longevity. Dr. Collins routinely treats complex cases referred by many dentists in the area due to his skills, expertise, and willingness to go the extra mile to help other dentists and patients. When you visit our practice, you’ll never be subjected to corporate jargon or confusing terms. Instead, we’ll take the time to answer all your questions, discuss prices up front, and get to know you as a person. We want our patients to understand every step of the process and go above and beyond to ensure they’re comfortable. Although adequate bone in your jaw and healthy gums are required for successful outcomes, Dr. Collins treats gum disease and performs bone grafting to enable the vast majority of patients to experience the life-changing aesthetic and functional benefits of dental implants in Charlottesville and Waynesboro, VA. In addition, he believes in treating all his patients with consideration and kindness, which is why many travel from far and come back!

Making Transformative Dental Implants Affordable

Along with long-lasting, life-changing advantages, dental implants have a higher initial cost than traditional alternatives. Bridges and crowns need to be replaced every five to 15 years on average. High-quality dental implants are permanent and can last 25-30 years or longer. That coupled with the dramatic improvements to your self-esteem, oral health, and systemic health make dental implants well worth the higher upfront cost. Our team believes everyone should have access to the transformative effects provided by dental implants. As such, we offer discounts, accept Medicaid and many insurance plans, file insurance claims, and work diligently to maximize your benefits. We offer substantial discounts and unlimited warranties on all dental implants. We’re happy to help you get set up with third-party financing through CareCredit® to make receiving dental implants from an experienced oral surgeon in Waynesboro and Charlottesville, VA even more affordable!
